Sometimes, it’s just nice to hear that you matter.

But when it’s “official” that you’re a vital part of something as important as the economy? That really hits the spot. And according to a study by economic research firm Decision Innovation Solutions, the animal food industry is officially a Big Deal when it comes to the country’s success.

Why We Matter

The study, which was completed in partnership with the American Feed Industry Association (AFIA), concluded that the animal food industry generated $267.1 billion in domestic sales in 2023. That is not an insignificant portion of the economy, and it’s something that anyone anywhere along the supply chain can be proud of. The work we do matters, and not just to animal owners and their animals. It’s important in the grand scheme, too.

How so?

Some highlights from the study are detailed in the official AFIA press release. In addition to more than a quarter trillion dollars in sales, the industry generated:

  • $6.9 billion in income for industry workers
  • 80,344 jobs
  • $3.7 billion in taxes paid

The study concludes that the 5,124 animal feed mills and 523 pet food facilities in the U.S. (as of 2023), “are an important driver of economic activity” in the nation that “contributes greatly to the local and national economies.”

Far-Reaching Tendrils

As part of the logistics end of the pet and livestock feed industry, we at Bill Barr see firsthand that the impact is even greater than these numbers suggest. It makes us consider just how far the industry’s economic impact really reaches. Just think of the transportation wing of the industry. How many vehicles are on the road every day, moving feed and ingredients across the country? How many trucking companies do we positively impact? How many mechanics? How many tires are bought and sold directly because of animal feed ingredients being moved 24/7, all year long?

We could go on. These queries might never be answered on any grand scale, but we’re glad that there are finally some real answers out there about our industry’s contributions to something as important as the national economy.
